Aleeia Smith’s interest in the legal field took root in high school.

“I joined the mock trial team as a sophomore at South Atlanta High School, and that’s when I discovered my passion for law,” she recalled.

Upon graduation from Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law, Aleeia will be joining the Fulton County District Attorney’s office in Atlanta, Ga., as an assistant district attorney.

Witnessing the impact of the criminal justice system on those closest to her and the broader community helped fuel her career decision, she said.

“I want to be an advocate—someone who stands up for those who’ve been taken advantage of and for people who need a voice because they don’t understand the legal system or how to navigate it,” she said.

After Aleeia earned her undergraduate degree in criminology from the University of West Georgia and entered the workforce, she started applying to law schools. 91ֱ’s Summer Starter program gave her the opportunity to see what law school would be like—and it affirmed her choice of schools.

“They believed in me and gave me a chance,” she said.

While at 91ֱ Law, Aleeia managed social media for the Black Law Students Association and served as the Student Bar Association class representative. She contributed to the Civil Rights Journal and was associate editor on Law Review. She also rose to the role of chief justice of 91ֱ Law’s Mock Trial and Moot Court program.

Throughout her law school journey, Aleeia developed strong relationships with faculty and administrators. One professor, in particular, made a lasting impression.

“Professor Kimberly Breedon’s dedication and support made it clear that our success genuinely mattered to her. She went beyond her role as a professor and became a mentor and inspiration.”

Smith is also deeply grateful for the unwavering support of her loved ones back home in Atlanta, especially her parents, siblings, and boyfriend.

“They carried me through it all,” she said. “Whenever I felt overwhelmed or alone, they were right there—reminding me of who I am, lifting me up with their words, and loving me through every moment. I couldn’t have made it without them.”

Congratulations Aleeia!
